YWCA Xcel Competitive Gymnasts Recognized by Common Council of New Britain

YWCA New Britain’s Xcel competitive gymnastics team athletes were recognized by the Common Council of the City of New Britain for their dedication and achievements in recent competitions.

All 14 team members made the cut in their division to qualify for the Xcel Gymnastics statewide competition. Each level has an "All Around" score- the combination of scores from vault, bars, beam, and floor- that is required to qualify for the state competition.

The young ladies were invited by Alderman Tremell Collins to attend the Common Council meeting at New Britain City Hall to be recognized for their overall achievements as a team. Tremell recognizes that “gymnastics promotes team spirit and sportsmanship, encouragement, and support of all members to make a commitment to excellence.”  Each athlete received an official certificate from the Council and posed for a picture with Mayor Erin Stewart.

“I am very proud of our athletes. Gymnastics is a rigorous and technical sport, it takes a lot of time, energy and focus in order to do well. The fact that the City Council of New Britain wanted to acknowledge our team is a great honor,” said Rebecca Mirando, Assistant Gymnastics Coach and Youth Sports Coordinator for YWCA New Britain.

YWCA New Britain restarted its gymnastics team in 2015.  Head Coach Chris Cote says, "Our YWCA gymnastics team has worked so hard and achieved so much in the past two years. It was rewarding for our athletes to receive recognition from the Mayor and the City of New Britain for their achievements to this point.  As coaches, we are very proud of their hard work, dedication, and perseverance.  We can not wait to see what these young women are capable of achieving in the future.”
