Frequently Asked Questions
What makes YWCA special?
YWCA is a world-wide network of women helping women to become financially secure. By joining YWCA you can participate in our local programs, and also become a part of this very large and important membership network with world wide impact. You’ll also notice at the YWCA, we care about you, we want you to take full advantage of our programs and will work with you to do that.
Do you have a childcare center?
Yes, the YWCA child care center is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and provides early childhood education for children from 6 weeks through 5 years of age. We also have fun and exciting before and after school programs for children from kindergarten through fifth grade (including summer camp.) Sometimes there are waiting lists, so call us as soon as possible to get an application and registration packet.
What type of programs and events do you offer?
YWCA has something for every woman – and her family. From our teen center to our senior fitness classes, adult education and crisis intervention services, we are here to serve as a resource for women of all ages and at all stages of life. Come check out our fitness center, dancing school, youth fitness programs and Wednesday health talks! Remember, most YWCA programs are open to both men and women, look at our program schedule for more information.
Are there any programs for young women?
Of course! YWCA has a program called STRIVE for girls in middle school. We concentrate on Science, Technology, Math and Engineering – in a fun and interesting way, while providing homework help, health education, great field trips, and a safe, supportive environment to talk with staff mentors and other girls. We also are home to New Britain’s House of Teens (known as HOT) – a teen center for girls in high school that offers health, fitness and nutrition activities, and empowers girls to use their voices to make changes they would like to see in our community through advocacy.
How can I register to join?
Some of our programs have on-line registration, others require an in-person visit or telephone call. Look for information under the program you are interested in, give us a call or come by and visit. We will be happy to answer your questions. You can also send us an e-mail via this website under the “contact us” tab if you have any questions.
Can men join the YWCA?
Yes, men can join YWCA. Most of our programs are open to both men and women- especially our child and adult fitness programs. The YWCA mission is focused on helping women and their families become financially stable, men play a very important role in realizing that mission. Look for more detailed information under the specific program in which you are interested.
